Whittled down from all the cars in the world, a group of 66 automotive journalists from across the globe have released their top 10 picks for the 2012 World Car of the Year and World Performance Car.

That list, which will be further narrowed this month, is initially selected by secret ballot and then submitted for re-evaluation by the panel.

Members then have a chance to rate each car based on overall merit, value, safety, environmental responsibility, emotional appeal, and significance. The top three are then scheduled to be announced March 6 at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show during a press conference.

The 2011 World Car of the Year was the Nissan Leaf, while the World Performance Car was the Ferrari 458 Italia. What we’re most curious about this year is the fact that the Porsche 911 made it into both categories.

Тюнер не ставит тут какие то границы в возможностях. По вашему желанию мастера компании готовы реализовать первый покорный своенравие.

Что же касается более «продвинутого» стайлинга, то здесь стоит погодить до весны. Есть на Женевском автосалоне довольно представлен лучший разновидность стайлинга вида кузова 911 носом названием «Kit 1». Он будет вводить предшествующий и задний спойлер, диффузор, так же вдруг и боковые пороги.

Перемена двигателя так же предусмотрена. Что тут обойдутся простеньким чипом. Просто-напросто зальют последний «софт» внешний блока управления, поставят спортивный мечта фильтр и доделают до конца систему выхлопа.

What’s better than winning a brand-new 2012 Toyota Camry? Winning one for yourself and a friend!

Along with a Super Bowl ad, which will air during half time, Toyota is launching its “pay it forward” contest that is an extension of Toyota’s “Camry Effect” campaign. This social media campaign shared Camry stories and memories from the past 30 years from over two million Camry owners across the U.S.

The Super Bowl ad, called “Connections,” is a tip of the hat to the “Camry Effect” campaign, showcasing a variety of memories that have taken place in a Camry.

To enter the contest, you have to download the Shazam mobile app and then visit Toyota.com/CamryEffect. Once there, just follow the instructions to tag audio while the “Connections” ad is playing during the Super Bowl. If you can’t download the app, you can still enter – just go to the website and follow the on-screen instructions. You can enter the contest a day leading up to the Super Bowl debut of the commercial, as well as entering again by using Shazam or entering online when the spot airs live on Sunday. You’ll be in the running to win a new Camry for yourself and another for your best bud – a prize that’s valued of $53,000.

Вдогонку за гламурным спорткаром B6 Cabrio в ателье Alpina представили и B6 Coupe нового поколения. Время, новую BMW M6 ждет подходящий соревнователь...

В  Alpina закончили образование своего модельного ряда B6 нового поколения. Напомним, чего-либо в BMW начали часть новой «шестерки» спервоначала с кабриолета, только причинность выведя на рынок и купе. В да поступили и в  Alpina, да, B6 Coupe представили только силу -- месяца со B6 Cabrio. Любопытно, есть изначально видах нового B6 Cabrio в компании заявляли двигатель V8 BiTurbo в 507 лошадиных сил. Но теперь, в обеих моделей в  Alpina уже указывают 540 сил. Более беспокоиться, немного улучшились и динамические характеристики B6 Cabrio. Разгон до сотки занимает только 4,5 секунды, а максимальная поспешность достигает 317 км/ч. Alpina B6 Coupe оказывается немного быстрее — 4,4 секунды и 320 км/ч. Снаряженная кусок купе — 1 870 кг, а открытой модели — каждый 2 020 кг.

Конечно, на B6 Coupe перешли все-таки компоненты Alpina, уже представленные на Cabrio. Но если передовой спойлер и задний диффузор остались неизменными, то небольшой спойлер на крышке багажника заменили крылом причудливой формы. И купе, и кабрио комплектуются 20-дюймовыми дисками Alpina Classic. И в компании заверяют, сколько беспричинно подобрали оптимальные настройки как подвески B6, в том числе задавая алгорифм работ системам Drive Performance Control и Dynamic Drive.

Конечно же в  Alpina готовы воплотить любые пожелания заказчика в отделке интерьера. Том отдельный элементы вроде панели приборов с синими циферблатами, накладок на пороги со встроенной подсветкой, спортивного руля, обшитого кожей Lavalina, непременно входят в комплектацию моделей семейства B6.

Ford said it was committed to making massive cuts in the waste it sends to landfill, as well as the water it uses, across its European production units.

The company said it would significantly increase the proportion of waste recycled and reused by cutting landfill waste by 70%. That means a reduction in the average landfill waste generated per vehicle to 1.5kg by 2016 from 5kg last year.

Based on annual production of 1.2m vehicles, the automaker also will reduce water use by 30% saving EUR2.3m (US$ 3m) in the same timespan - approximately 1.3bn litres per year. This equates to an average saving of 1,100 litres for each vehicle produced.
 
Stephen Odell, chairman and CEO, Ford of Europe said, "This plan represents our pledge to minimise Ford's impact on the environment both before and after our customers get behind the wheel. This goes hand in hand with our commitment to develop the most fuel efficient vehicles. Sustainability makes just as much sense for Ford as a business as it does for the environment."

The announcement builds upon previous actions that have helped Ford of Europe become the global company's lowest producer of landfill waste. It has has cut landfill-waste generation by 40% since 2007 and reduced water use by 37% over the same period.

The new commitment covers manufacturing in Genk, Belgium, Valencia, Spain, Saarlouis and Cologne, Germany plus Southampton, Bridgend and Dagenham, UK. Genk, Saarlouis and Cologne had previously taken significant steps to reduce landfill waste and are now all waste-to-landfill free, the automaker added.

If you had the chance to go on a driving adventure with a celebrity, which one would not make your list? In Britain, that celeb turns out to be controversial Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson.

According to research by Continental Tyres, British drivers wouldn’t want Clarkson as their co-pilot during a 4×4 drive across the Sahara Desert. Continental Tyres polled 2,000 drivers as part of the launch of this year’s Conti 4×4 Trophy, an epic off road challenge where contestants drive a Hummer across the Sahara Desert.

“Jeremy Clarkson might have motoring credentials but either his calamitous road trips on Top Gear, his lack of practical skills or his outspoken views mean most people would leave him behind,” said Tim Bailey, spokesperson for Continental Tyres.

In terms of who they would want to share the journey with, men would like to bring Kelly Brook along for the drive, while women chose Robert Pattinson to rev their engine.

There are three things a gasoline engine needs: air, fuel and spark. The spark plug ignites the air/fuel mixture, producing the combustion that powers the engine. Despite the fact that spark plugs have featured in vehicles for more than a century, Matthew Beecham finds that manufacturers are still pushing back the technical boundaries. 

Ignitability and durability are the two main factors pushing spark plug innovations, according to Sean Lyon, senior product manager, Autolite, adding:“In terms of the key factors pushing spark plug innovation right now however, relates to an issue we are all concerned about these days: the high cost of fuel. Fuel cost and government regulations on vehicle emissions and fuel economy are driving engine technology toward smaller-displacement engines with higher power density. This is being achieved with direct injection, charge air boosting, and more dilute air-to-fuel ratios. These engine design changes result in the need for smaller-diameter and longer spark plugs that offer improved ignitability through finewire electrode tip designs. In terms of Autolite’s innovations, our engineering team has spent the last three years developing a 12-millimeter plug that will maintain the quality and performance that Autolite products are known for, while delivering the value that our customers demand.”

Tim Howes, technical services manager, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd agrees that the demand for plugs with greater ignition performance, longer service life and reduced general dimensions continues apace. “Ever leaner air/fuel mixtures and higher applied voltages create significant challenges for plug design. As with the modern high speed diesel engine, the spark ignition engine has seen the space occupied by the valves increase significantly, thus reducing the space available for the spark plug. “

Direct injection or GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) is becoming the fuel delivery system of choice for automakers. With the first commercial introduction in 1996 by Mitsubishi, nearly all automakers currently offer at least one advanced powerplant equipped with these systems - with more platforms scheduled.

However, Louis Camilli, founder and president of Enerpulse Inc believes that there are operating nuances with GDI that continue to prevent wholesale adoption of the process. He told us:  “One is that, in some engines, devastating knock occurs during lean operation with no warning.  A second is that not all combustion chamber designs are suitable for stratified charge lean operation using GDI. These are engineering issues that will be resolved over time and may be mitigated using the Pulstar high-power discharge ignition. To date the only change to the design of spark plugs has been the migration to a cooler heat range with added thickness to the insulator projecting into the cylinder for added mechanical strength.”

Even though spark plug technology is improving, can it really catch-up with engine life?  i.e. is a ‘life of engine’ spark plug a possibility? “The parts of a spark plug that wear out are the electrodes and related spark gap,” said Jeff Boehler, chief engineer, fellow, Autolite.  “Material and manufacturing technologies could provide spark plugs that may last a very long time, but the cost of these plugs may not always be a wise investment. Today you will see many cars on the road with a couple hundred thousand miles on them. While still running, these engines are probably no longer able to perform at top efficiency. As these high-mileage engines and related systems age and degrade, the spark plug may be degraded in other ways than gap wear, such as fouling from excess oil consumption or mechanical damage due to excessive detonation. So the real question to be answered first is: What is the life of an engine?”

In this extract from just-auto's QUBE research on electric vehicle technologies, we take a quick look at so-called stop-start systems. Do you know, for example, that Mazda's solution does not involve the starter motor or that stop-start has been a non-starter in North America?

Also known as idle-stop systems, these are sometimes erroneously referred to as hybrids. There’s even a made-up category name for them: micro-hybrid.

But in fact they’re not hybrids, in the sense that they have neither a secondary battery pack nor an extra electric drive motor. The sole factor that sets apart a vehicle fitted with a stop-start system from a standard petrol or diesel car is that the engine switches off when it decelerates or comes to a stop.

As soon as the driver puts in the clutch or moves the shift lever (in a manual-gearbox car), or lifts off the brake and accelerates (in cars with automatic transmission), the stop-start system uses a high-output version of a standard 12V battery to start up the engine, and the car moves away as usual.

Start-stop systems are being fitted to a number of new models in Europe and Asia, from small (various Mini models) to large (the Porsche Panamera). Among others, certain models from BMW, Citroën, Fiat, Mini, Peugeot and a handful of Volkswagen Group brands are offered with a start-stop option.

A variation on conventional start-stop systems is the clever Mazda i-Stop system, which does not involve the starter motor at all. Instead, the engine is stopped when one piston is just a few degrees past the top of its compression stroke. As the brake pedal is lifted, the system’s control software sends power to that cylinder’s spark plug to fire the engine, and it resumes operation as standard – with no involvement from the starter motor.

No vehicle is sold in North America with a stop-start system, due to two factors:

the US Environmental Protection Agency test cycles simulate very little sustained stop-and-go urban traffic;current EPA regulations require every vehicle engine to perform a complex series of diagnostic self-tests every time it restarts, which can take a few seconds – clearly impractical for an engine switching itself off and on many times an hour in dense traffic.

Robert Davis, who is senior vice-president for quality, research and development at Mazda North America, said the company’s tests show the i-Stop system would increase gas mileage on the city test cycle by only 0.1-0.2mpg. In traffic like that of London, Tokyo, or New York, on the other hand, he said the reduction in fuel usage could add as much as 3mpg to the mileage figure.

That list is expected to grow rapidly, especially in those European and Asian countries with either explicit limits on vehicular CO2 emissions or zero-/low-emissions cordons in central city areas. Thus far, the total number of start-stop systems installed globally is less than 1m (versus more than 2m full hybrids manufactured since 1997).

But start-stop technology, of any design, may grow over the next decade to volumes of several million a year in Europe and Asia. Parts maker Valeo, which produces start-stop components and systems that are fitted by several European makers, estimates that in the densest urban traffic, vehicles can idle fully one-third of the time. Those emissions are entirely eliminated by start-stop systems.

Indeed, the greatest gains of such systems might be to the foul urban air quality of China’s growing cities, leading some analysts to suggest that China could benefit the most from universal fitment of start-stop systems. That is unlikely to happen without government mandate, however.

It is also unclear whether consumers in very hot or very cold climates throughout the world will willingly accept the loss of air-conditioning or heating while the engine remains off.

We do not define start-stop systems as hybrids, and they are far from ‘electric-drive vehicles’ because the starter motor does not provide motive power. Hence they are not included in this series of market analyses.

Ныне лакомиться и для «эрки». Тюнер Je Design анонсировал часть стайлинга «Wide Body» прилика актуального внедорожника VW Touareg в серийной комплектации «R». Дежурный костюмчик ремонтная обещает идеальные линии, взбитые пропорции и приличный плюс в доводке силового агрегата.

«Wide Body» — касаться весь уже привычное чужой. Некоторый давненько уже предпочитают привычным «базовым» доработкам более серьёзный тюнинг в виде широченных спойлеров и колёсных арок. Испытание на товар шамать. Действительно подражать.

Je Design предложил забав серийной комплектации «R-Line» новую решётку радиатора, фронтальный спойлер, расширенные колёсные арки, диффузор ухом накладку дверь багажника. Стоимость обвеса — от 4 650 евро. Закругляет картинку — четырёхстволка выхлопной системы, с двумя овальными патрубками справа и слева, срезанный за счёт модернизированной подвески клиренс (минус 35 мм), 22-дюймовые колёсные диски с шинами 295/30 и расширенная колея (передняя ось на 60 мм и задняя на 80 мм).

Притча! касается мощности, то здесь был предложен характеристичный «чип». Перепрограммировав электронный блок управления, мощность 4,2-литрового 340-сильного TDI-агрегата удалось приумножить до 410 лошадиных сил и 930 Нм максимального крутящего момента ((серия — 800 Нм). Разгон до сотни осуществляется за 5,4 секунды, а максимальная живость составляет 269 км/ч ((серия — 5,8 секунды и максималка в 242 км/ч). Цена — от 2 999 евро. В ценник входит годовая залог на двигатель, систему наддува и трансмиссию.

Как более слабого 3,0-литрового 240-сильного TDI-варианта предлагается наращивание мощности до 285 лошадиных сил.

В области интерьера было предложено приговор с отделкой поверхностей алькантарой и вставками из карбона иначе алю.
